Our Year So Far 2010 - 2011

Saturday 9th July 2011.

Cricket at Old Trafford.

Malcolm, Harold, Frank & Mike at the cricketThe final One Day International cricket match played between the touring Sri Lanka side and England was held at Old Trafford. Having several keen cricket enthusiasts in the Club, it is not surprising that 3 of our members popped over to see this match, which turned out to be a “Ripper”! Unfortunately, Ron (Spadger) Parry got the Jonathan’s (trott’s), sorry about the pun, so could not make it, but fortunately a substitute was easily found so all was well. Leaving Frodsham by train, after an uneventful journey, Frank, Mike, Malcolm and Harold (a very good friend of Frank’s) stopped off for breakfast in Manchester at Don Giovanni’s, where they were served a full English breakfast by a Czech waiter and a Persian waitress! In double quick time they were all at Old Trafford where the weather was not at it’s best, but the match started on time.

As the match progressed, the weather improved dramatically and so did the level of alcohol consumption by those seated around the foursome! By the mid point of Sri Lanka’s innings, it appeared that the focus of interest was on the formation of towers of plastic beer glasses and un-intelligible alcohol fuelled banter as opposed to the cricket, but Hey Hoo, that’s life. After the match, which England won, the slow journey home began; following a quick pint in Weatherspoon’s, the quartet were soon back on a train and away home.

Frank – A Great Day Out, Thanks.

Children’s Play Area at Sutton Weaver

At our Clubs meeting on Thursday the 12th of May, our guest speaker was Colin Whelan, who told us about the work done by the Sutton Weaver Community Group in relation to their villages derelict children’s play area. At the end of his talk, we were pleased to pass to him a cheque for £500, which was to be put towards the project.

Following the receipt of an invitation letter from Colin, on Saturday the 16th of July, Sam Williams, Chairman of our Clubs Community Services Committee, along with Malcolm Davies went along to the official opening of the Children’s Play Area.

As can be seen from the photograph, the event was well attended by local children, there parents and families, and best of all, ……… the sun was shining.

Junior Bowls

Pupils and staff from Helsby Hillside with Rotarian visitors

Some while ago, our Club donated £250 to the Crown Green Bowling Section of Helsby Community Sports Club specifically for the purchase of bowls and jacks that will be used in the coaching of primary school children. On Monday the 18th of July, President Graham and 4 other Club members went along to Helsby Hillside Primary School for a special Presentation Ceremony involving 10 school pupils from the school.

Following a warm greeting by the Headmaster of the school, Craig Richardson, it was left to John Clements from HCSC, who is a qualified Coach, along with Fred Heart and Sylvia Crossley-Jones who are Assistant Coaches to join our President in awarding the pupils their Bowls Achievement Certificates. These certificates were earned as a result of successfully completing a British Crown Green Bowling Association course specially designed for juniors.

Congratulations to everyone involved.

John also advised that he was pleased with the responses from a further 5 other local Primary Schools, who have expressed an interest in having pupils from their school attend future courses. A further development is that John, Fred and Sylvia are looking into extending their coaching sessions to indoor venues during the closed season, which they hope will provide yet more opportunities for young school children to experience this wonderful sport. Shown here are 9 of the10 pupils along with President Graham and 4 Club members, with, from left to right, John, Fred, Craig and Sylvia.

At 1pm, many of the exhibitors took part in a parade through Frodsham, which generated a great deal of interest from members of the public in Main Street and Church Street especially.

Judging took place during the afternoon and the winners of the various show categories were as follows:

(exhibitor John Leleu)

Best Classic - VW Karman Ghia
(exhibitor Eddie Duggan)

Best Bike - Norton Commando

Councillor Rita Shearn, who was deputising for Frodsham Mayor Andrew Dawson, presented the prizes.

In addition to the vehicles on display, visitors also enjoyed looking at trade stands and there were fairground rides and amusements for the children. There were great prizes to be won on a Rotary Tombola stall and even a tattoo artist in resident inside the Community Centre. Tea, coffee and cakes were provided by members of the Inner Wheel Club of Frodsham & Helsby. There was also a licensed bar in the Community Centre. The Rotary club also ran their famous bacon and burger stall as well as a baked potato stall.

Feedback from many members of the public who attended was that it was nice to see such a well-organised event being staged in Frodsham, allowing many local people to walk to the event. The Club is very grateful to all those who took part and attended the event which was the culmination of many months work. Thanks also go to Frodsham Community Association for their support.

The Motor Show is one of many fund-raising events that the Rotary Club organises throughout the year. The money raised allows the club to support projects and groups both international and locally.

Installation of Plaque

Tree plaque

Twenty years ago the Rotary Club planted trees on the Memorial Field in Frodsham as part of an initiative by RIBI. The request from RIBI was for each club to plant one tree per member and in the event we planted additional trees to mark lost members.

The trees, rowan, oak, birch and ash, were planted in a circle to replicate the Rotary roundel and despite less than favourable conditions on the top of the hill most of them survived.

At the request of the Tree Group of Frodsham Town Council we were asked if we would fund a descriptive plaque to inform visitors of the different species planted. This was recently installed and looks magnificent as the picture shows ....

The team at the Frodsham bonfire

Members of the club supported both Helsby and Frodsham community bonfire and fireworks evenings.

On Friday 4th a group of members assisted at the Helsby event. Despite very unfortunate weather it was reported that a good time was had by the all those who turned out; and the event ran at a profit.

On Saturday 5th November the annual Bonfire and Firework display was organised at the Community Centre by members of the Frodsham Round Table, The Rotary Club of Frodsham and Helsby were invited to provide food for the public, In total ten members volunteered and put in a sterling effort providing Hot Dogs, Burgers and Jacket Potatoes, all stock was sold out in an hour and thirty minutes taking in excess of £700.00. Ladies Circle provided Tea, Coffee and Sweets in the Community Centre, the event was very well planned and additional support was given by the 41 Club, Town Council and Community Association plus volunteers.

This was a fantastic event bringing together various fund raising organisations providing an excellent evening for the community and raising much needed funds for many local charities, well done and thank you to all who were involved.
