Reception Dinner - Celebration of Halton & Frodsham Harriers.
It was with the greatest of pleasure that President Malcolm and his wife Maggie represented our Club at a Reception Dinner and Celebration of Halton & Frodsham Harriers held on Friday the 23rd of February at the Forest Hills Hotel, here in Frodsham.
The evening was opened by Doug Shingler, the Deputy Mayor of Vale Royal who welcomed everyone to the event and was pleased to make special presentations to Official Guests from both Norway and Spain?s Primary Education Ministries.
Prior to the meal being served, grace was said by our very own Past President, Les Cottrell, who is also the long standing President of Halton & Frodsham Harriers.
Following the wonderfully prepared and presented meal, our good friend and Honorary Member, George Bunner MBE, PHF said a brief word about the Halton & Frodsham Harriers and the link that was formed between the Harriers and the Sportshall Athletic Association which George initially formed many years ago. He went on to outline the importance he places on working together with local Councils, Organizations and Businesses which has brought about the success now being accorded to the Sportshall Athletic Association and the work they do bringing the enjoyment of Sporting Activities to many children throughout the world, who previously would not have had such experiences.
The links with our Club did not stop there, because another Honorary Member, Dennis Taylor, our Town Mayor proposed 'A Toast To Three Kingdoms' in recognition of the Official Guests from both Norway, Spain and of course the UK.
It was then left to Mike Hall, the MP for Weaver Vale to propose the final toast to 'Halton & Frodsham Harriers' in which he made mention of the support given by the various organizations present to The Sportshall Athletic Association and in particular, Frodsham Community Association, which was represented by their Chairman, who is our Past President and current Hon. Treasurer, Sam Williams.
As one would expect, Joan Cottrell along with Vanessa Williams, Pammi Taylor, Sheila Bunner and Maggie Davies made sure that their 'Escorts' behaved in a proper manner, thereby ensuring that the reputation of our Club, its members and the Rotary movement as a whole, remained unblemished.
Thank You Ladies.
A Presentation by The 'Will to Work Workshop'
On Thursday the 15th
of March, our Club was enthralled by the presentation given by Barry
Hillier of the Workshop when he described the work done to help provide
practical ways for people to rebuild their confidence to carry out
practical work. Dennis Kieght, who is involved with the Workshop's
financial management, supported the presentation.
The Will to Work Workshop, a group for disabled people, continues to flourish in its new premises in Fountains Lane, Frodsham. Recently they have made some seats for around trees in the grounds of Frodsham Church School; they have also made several Wooden Crosses for use by the local Churches during Holy Week and other Religious Festivals.
As a complete change of activity they have undertaken to look after the raised beds in the scented garden at the Arts Centre in Castle Park, Frodsham.
Not long ago they made a very large and quite superior Doll's House, which they raffled locally to raise much-needed funds for their Workshop. The Group was pleased to learn that the person who won this unique Prize then passed it over to a local Children's Hospice as a present for the young ones. What a fantastic gesture!
Barry explained how the Workshop is always in need of both expert practical assistance, particularly in 'Woodcraft & Machining' skills and of course with financial help and support. Therefore, it was with the greatest of pleasure that our Club was pleased to pass over to our Guests, a donation to help with the cost of running their Workshop.
Our photograph shows Dennis Kieght and Barry Hillier from the Workshop along with President Malcolm during the presentation of the cheque.
A Helping Hand For Halton Haven Hospice's Easter Appeal.
At our Club's
recent meeting, President Malcolm advised that he had received a
request for help from Halton Haven Hospice, with regard to the
possibility of providing them with assistance in their forthcoming
Easter Fund Raising Appeal.
Without further ado, as they say in erudite circles, our Club member, Ian Tickle, made contact with them in order to assess what he might be able to do to help, on a personal basis.
As a consequence of that conversation, on Tuesday the 20th of March the organizers made a delivery to Ian's office in Main Street, Frodsham, which left one room piled high with box's full of Easter Bunnies and Chick's (No, not real ones!) along with Cash Collecting Boxs and Advertising Material.
The task of distributing these items to several local Schools and some 30 Shops, Public Buildings, Hotels, Restaurants, Hostelries and Businesses was made easier as a direct result of 5 other Club members, namely Phil Atkinson, Brian Henshaw, Jeff Mycock, Peter Wilde and President Malcolm, joining Ian in his voluntary work.
It will be some time in the future before we learn how much money this appeal, on behalf of Halton Haven Hospice, has raised but we are sure that our Club members efforts, along with the work done by many other volunteers in the area, will be well worth it.
The photo shows Ian Tickle and President Malcolm with some of their Cute and Cuddly Friends!
On behalf of our Club we would like to say a big thank-you to all those who so generously donated to Halton Haven's Easter Appeal.
The 59th Charter Anniversary Lunch of S.I. Runcorn, Frodsham & District Club.
It was with the greatest of pleasure that on Saturday the 17th of March, President Malcolm and his wife Maggie were guests of Dr. Sarah Froggatt, the President of Soroptimist International Runcorn, Frodsham and District Club.
The occasion was their Club's 59th Annual Charter Lunch, which this year was held at The Fourways Inn at Delamere, where some 66 fellow Soroptimists and Guests joined President Sarah in the celebrations.
The delicious four-course meal, with wine, was preceded by the reading of 'The Objects of Soroptimism' by Margaret Goodier, a 5 times President of their Club.
Following the Loyal Toast, President Sarah proposed the 'Toast to Our Guests', which this year was responded to by Eddie Shiff, the President of our Mother Club, Runcorn. His presentation highlighted some of the common links between S.I. and R.I., particularly Local, National and International Humanitarian & Charity work, but not forgetting, of course, the highly important Fellowship activities.
In response to his 'Toast to S.I.', Mair Jones, their Regional President of S.I. covered many aspects of the current work done by their Organization, which was appropriate, pertinent and politely concise. This, linked with her speaking with a wonderfully lyrical Welsh accent, ensured that her presentation was well received by all present.
The Guest Speaker this year was Tracy Gardiner, a long time friend of President Sarah. In her wonderfully amusing presentation, she shed light on, amongst other things, her experiences as Chief Steward at the recent Annual S.I. Federation Conference in Gateshead which included problems with a Grand Piano and the relevance of the T-Shirt she was wearing, which said on it: Big beautiful and curvy!
As she rightly said - 'Do it Big, Do it Right, Give it Class'. Fantastic!
The last word was left to the Toast Mistress, Helen Owen, who thanked everyone for making the 59th Charter Anniversary Lunch the success it was and finished by wishing everyone a safe and pleasant journey home.
Our photo's show the Presentation party, from left to right - President Eddie Shiff (Runcorn), Irene Hatton, Tracey Gardiner, President Sarah Froggatt, Mair Jones Maggie Davies and President Malcolm.

Enterprise Competition - Helsby High School
Frodsham and Helsby Rotary Club have started an Enterprise Competition with Helsby High School to provide students with an insight into the processes and issues associated with starting and running a business.
The principle of
the
competition is that students working
alone or
in small groups in the school create small businesses delivering a
product or service. The Rotary Club have agreed to provide coaching and
support as the students develop their ideas and create and deliver a
Business Plan in the period December 2006 to March 2007. The Rotary
Club will award small prizes each month to the best performing
businesses to help them finance their business ideas.
At the end of the competition there will be overall cash prize awards for the best three businesses and the members of all the competing businesses will receive a certificate of achievement from the Rotary Club.
So far five businesses have been registered in the competition and they are now busy putting together their Business Plans and getting to grips with marketing plans, cash flow forecasts and profit and loss accounts! Each business will have to present their Business Plan to a Panel of Rotarians and answer questions on it early in the New Year
More details of the businesses and how they are doing will be posted on the web over the next few months.
