Jade Carr receives an award of £500 from President Malcolm
When the club received a letter from Jade Carr (13) everyone was very impressed with her track record. At the age of 3 she had a heart transplant because of Dilated Cardiomyopathy from birth. So what did she do next? She took part in a Transplant Games competition. Then aged 8 she needed a Pacemaker, and continued to compete so that after 10 years she now has a total of 20 medals. This includes 3 gold medals (Long Jump, Badminton and Ball Throw) won at the recent British Transplant Games held at the University of Bath. Jade is a student at Helsby High School and a member of Frodsham Harriers.
Jade's letter was a plea for financial assistance to represent the United Kingdom at the World Transplant Games in Bangkok in August this year. She needs a total of £5200 to cover her kit and travel for herself and her parents, Rob and Lynne.
The club's Community Service Committee had no hesitation in recommending that Jade should be awarded £500, and this was given to her at her home on the 11th April by President Malcolm accompanied by Mike Collins Chairman of the Committee.
The Chairman of Frodsham & District Round Table Makes a Colourful Visit.
In late
December
last year,
just prior to the Christmas festivities,
several of our Club members were involved with our good friends in
Frodsham and District Round Table as they took charge of Tables
'Christmas Float' on two separate occasions.
In recognition of the help our Club members provided on those nights, it was with the greatest pleasure that at our recent Dinner Meeting, President Malcolm was pleased to accept a cheque for £150 from their Chairman, Eddie Cottrell.
Now, it just so happened that on the same evening as our Club's Dinner meeting, all the members of Frodsham & District Round Table were present in the Forest Hills Hotel for their Annual General Meeting, which had a 'Hawaiian' theme. It was therefore seen as most appropriate that Eddie should briefly join us in order to show our Club members that 'Tablers' still know how to 'Dress to Impress'.
As Chairman Eddie so perceptively pointed out, he was quite sure that we too would be wearing Fancy Dress for our AGM, which is to be held soon!
I wonder if he will be proved right?
To all the members of Frodsham & District Round Table, may we thank you for your kindness and wish your Club much success in the future, hoping that the incoming Chairman, Dom McDermott, has a great year in office.
Ladies Night.
This
year our Club's 'Ladies Night' was held
on Saturday
the 21st of April at the Crest Hotel in Runcorn. There, President
Malcolm and his wife Maggie welcomed some 67 Club members, their Wives
and Guests of the Club, to a wonderful evenings entertainment that had
been principally organized by Jeff Mycock and Fred Bishop, members
of the Fellowship and Social Committee, with seating done by
Roy
Wallwork.
Well Done Gentlemen.
The evening began with brief words of welcome from the President to those present. He was then followed by our VPII Nominee, Brian Henshaw, who said a simple Grace as opposed to a Grace he had found from a Cistercian Monastery (that was in its original Latin form), which ran to some 300 lines!
Thank-you for your thoughtfulness and consideration Brian.
Following the delicious 4 course meal, the evenings entertainment got into full swing.
As is our tradition, firstly VPI Barry Linaker proposed a toast to 'Our Ladies'.
As he so succinctly put it, he is a child of the 60's, so his speech will be like a Mini-Skirt, long enough to cover the bare essentials yet short enough to be interesting! Now, having worked with Ladies all his life and at home being surrounded by the fairer sex, he claimed he is attuned to their 'Wicked Whit', so he proceeded to give several fine examples of their 'Art' that demonstrated that Ladies should not be trifled with.
In his conclusion, he pointed out that a lasting relationship with a woman is good for the man, as it adds some 4 years to his life expectancy, despite it feeling like 10 years!
Will Carol have something to say about that when she gets you home Barry?
In her response to Barry's toast, Maggie Davies cleverly likened her speech to that of the winner of the 'Best Supporting Actress' at the Oscar's or BAFTA's Film Award Ceremony. In true theatrical tradition, she included thanks to the 'Director', her best friend, Barbara Williams, 'Producers' Sam & Vanessa Williams, 'Role Model' her remarkable friend and predecessor, Daniela Cervenka, her 'Stylist' Christine her sister and of course her 'Parents and Family', without whom she would not be where she is today!
Following these two fascinating presentations and with not a dry eye in the house, it was with the greatest of pleasure that President Malcolm presented bouquets to the President of The Inner Wheel Club of Frodsham & Helsby, Jean Brook and then to his wife, Maggie.
However, not wishing to leave all the other Ladies without some form of floral gift, a single Red Rose was presented to them all as a 'Special' thank-you.
Our M.C. for the evening, Sam Williams, then closed the formal part of the evening by firstly thanking the Hotel Management and Staff for their hard work and politeness and then Sid, for his excellent choice of music during the meal. He then ended by thanking everyone for attending the Dinner, wishing them a safe and un-eventful journey home.
Dancing to 'Sid' and his 'Dinks International Disco' then followed and it was pleasing to note that the dance floor remained busy from the very start, right until the Last Waltz finally drew the evening to a gentle close.
National Stroke Awareness Day
It was, for a pleasant change, a warm and sunny day when our Club once again took part in this National Initiative, which this year was held on Saturday the 28th of April.
Organised and co-ordinated by The Stroke Association, the aim of the initiative is to increase public awareness of the dangers of high blood pressure that can lead to strokes. To achieve this aim, Rotary Clubs across the U.K. offer free blood pressure tests to the public, administered by health professionals.
This year we were pleased to use the newly re-furbished Church Hall in Church Street, which provided superb facilities to hold the event.
Members of the public agreeing to the blood pressure check were given a result card together with a leaflet explaining the relationship between high blood pressure and stroke and also offered the chance to speak privately with the health professionals, should they so wish.
A total of 13 Club members worked in shifts on both sides of Church Street using their charm and persuasive powers to encourage the public to take part and it is pleasing to note that during the day, a record 243 people volunteered for a blood pressure test.
This is the fifth year that our Club has participated in this initiative, which once again was well supported by the local population, to whom we are most grateful.
As with previous years, our Club is indebted to Richard Brook and the health professionals from his local G.P. practice along with other Club members, their wives and friends, who gave of their time to administer the tests and give appropriate clinical advice.
Our photos show our Club members enjoying the day, as did the members of the public who had their blood pressure checked.

Club Bowls Tounament.
For many years now, our Club has held a keenly fought annual Club Bowls Tournament andyes, this year was to be no exception.
On the bright and warm evening of Thursday the 17th of May, an overwhelming proportion of our Clubs members met at Sutton Fields Golf Driving Range Complex, to do battle for the highly coveted Tournament Shield.
As was to be expected, tempers were short, the tension was high, with nerves
a-jangling in every corner of the crown green, as the battle for supremacy began.
In an up and down, in and out affair, past Champions fell by the way-side and dark horses appeared as if many a stable door had been left open, but true class shone through at regular intervals and quality players started to perform to their best.
Despite the green being a little on the slow side and hence over-arm bowling being permitted, the assembled crowd were eventually treated to Semi-Finals and, of course a Final of breathtaking quality.
As with all good Tournaments, a worthy winner slowly emerges through a morass of good players, mixed with a few mediocre players and of course no-hopers like the President and so it was this year!
Following a right royal battle, where no quarter was expected or given, Rod Hyde eventually overcame the fighting tenacity of Hedley Greaves to take this years title and 1st Place accolades.
Following a delicious meal in the Club House provided by Barbara Ford and her Staff, President Malcolm handed over the Tournament Shield to Rod, who, with emotion bringing a lump to his throat and a tear to his eye, graciously accepted both the Tournament Shield and the accompanying applause with un-disguised pleasure, advising that in winning the Bowls Competition, he now felt VERY OLD!
To a man, all present vowed to return next year to try to do better! So .... Can't wait.
