President Tony's Year

Equinox Carols

A Christmas Sing-a-long With Equinox.

Once again our Club was pleased to support an event that has been put together by our Club member, Frank Ball, for the last 3 years. In conjunction with Five Crosses Methodist Church and the Equinox choral group, a Christmas Sing-a-long was held on Friday the 23rd of December.

Despite the cold and the rain, the Church was filled to near capacity and the audience was not disappointed in any way as Equinox provided a wonderful programme for the evening. The concert included a wide selection of Christmas music and of course a full selection of Carols that the audience were asked to join in with the singing.

During the interval, everyone was provided with either tea or coffee along with a traditional Mince Pie, which clearly was well received.

In his closing remarks, our President thanked those members of the Church who had worked so hard preparing the Church for the evenings performance. Thanks were also passed to Equinox and their special guest Jennifer Ball, who under their pianist and Musical Director, Dorothy Devlin, had provided such a wonderful programme for everyone's enjoyment. Finally thanks were passed to all those who had braved the cold and wet and attended the concert and it was hoped that a similar evening might be organised for next years Christmas celebrations!

It is also pleasing to note that the evening raised some £810, and so it is with pleasure that we are able to confirm that £400 of this money was passed to 5 Crosses Methodist Church for their appropriate use.

The 25th Anniversary Of The 4 Villages Half Marathon.

For the 4th year in succession, our Club was once again pleased to support Helsby Sports and Social Club with their 4 Villages Half Marathon which was held on Sunday the 22nd of January. As in previous years our Club was asked to organized site traffic management and car parking along with the provision of a refreshment stall selling bacon butties and hot drinks.

This year however was the 25th Anniversary of this event and as might be expected the event was made 'more special' by extending the maximum number of entrants to 2500 athletes!

Our Club were therefore faced with the management and parking of even higher levels of cars, yet due to the ongoing development of much of the land surrounding the venue, with a vastly reduced area upon which to park these cars. However, thanks to Matthew France the Store Manager of Tesco, this problem was eased slightly as a result of the provision of some 150 parking spaces on the Supermarket site.

And so it was with much diplomacy and tact that a Team of 15 of our Club members 'squeezed a quart into a pint pot' - well done gentlemen!

As far as our Clubs refreshment stall was concerned, it went into production just after 8.00 am and with the help of a Team of 8, who worked extremely hard throughout the event, managed to make and sell some 600 cups of tea, coffee & hot chocolate along with nearly 400 sizzling bacon bapps. As a result of this sterling work, we managed to raise some £480 for Rotary Charities - well done Team!

The photos show our stall in full production, with some of the car parking team taking a well deserved break.

Roaf Tours is the affectionate name given to a series of worldwide trips organised by Club member Rtn David Roaf.

The most recent involved seven past and present members and their partners. Over a three week period we toured both the North and South Islands in self drive vehicles and staying at pre booked hotels.

The trip was formally arranged by Anna Black, of General Travel [Anna.Black@gt.co.nz]. We can highly recommend them!

The picture is the party walking the Fox Glacier boots and crampons supplied although the boots never dry out from the last user. The green hats were loaned and Mervyn inseparable from his pink rucksack!

We are now experts on New Zealand Wines.

Keith Bott & friends The Induction Of Our 3rd New Member this Presidential Year.

It was with the greatest of pleasures that President Tony opened our most recent Dinner meeting of Thursday, the 2nd of March, by inducting Keith Bott into our Club.

Once again, our directed efforts in recruiting new members into our Club has proved successful, Keith being the 9th new member to be brought into the Club in the past 10 months, or put in a slightly different way, the 3rd this Presidential year.

Originally, it was intended that 3 new members would be inducted at our Dinner meeting, however despite all our planning, business commitments prevented two of the three from attending our meeting, but rest assured, their induction will follow in the very near future (work permitting)!

Our photo shows our newest member in the centre along with President Tony and Keith's sponsor, Roy Wallwork.

Keith ............. welcome to Rotary and to our Club.
